I bought two of these in different lengths to hopefully keep outside lengths of potable water hose from freezing. One hose runs from an outside hose bib on my house into a valve which feeds an underground PEX run. The other hose connects the PEX where it comes out of the ground into a travel trailer city water inlet. The travel trailer sees winter use so I wanted to keep the water flowing. I live in Fayetteville NC so bitter bouts of cold are not typical here but there are times when the outside temperature will not get above freezing for a few days.
I attached this product to my hoses using a specialized heating cable application tape (Easy Heat HCA 30-Foot by 1/2-Inch Cold Weather Valve and Pipe Heating Cable Application Tape) . I then wrapped the hoses and heating cable with self sealing outdoor rated foam rubber insulation (like foam noodles that people use in pools but these are rated for outdoor pipe insulation).
The plug ends of these cables have what I’m guessing is a small neon bulb that lights to indicate that the system has power applied. This is a useful benefit to visually verify that power is applied to the system. I find this feature very valuable, although I didn’t think much of it when I was purchasing these items.
The past couple of weeks have been exceptionally cold (for my location). Low temperatures at night have been below 20F and there have been a few days where the high temperature has not approached freezing. I have to say that these things work. The travel trailer had continuous flowing water through the hoses that are heated with this product. The travel trailer has a propane furnace that keeps the baseline temperature comfortable so the interior PEX plumbing is not an issue. For the outdoor supply lines though, these are working well.
I have seen questions as to whether these products can be used with flexible hoses such as garden hoses instead of only being useful for copper, PVC, CPVC, etc. So far, the products have presented no problem with the application on the water hoses. As other reviews and questions mention, my hoses are always water filled.

Nice heavy cord, Very well constructed. This is a heated cord more than heat tape. I used router and sealed mine inside of a 2×4 with caulk. It’s used as a perch for peacocks. They sit on the perch more now. The thermostat works great. Don’t have to worry about plug-in and unplug. Board is cool during the day and warm at night. I’m very pleased with the product. The longevity is the only thing in question now.

works great our chickens have water in winter

This seems to be a well designed and well made heat tape, with thermostat at the end farthest from the plug and compact enough to make it easy to attach to the pipe and include inside the insulation (so it measures pipe, not air, temperature). The transparent plug includes an indicator light to let you know that there is power to the heat tape.
The only downside is that, at 7 watts per foot, an 80 foot cable consumes 560 watts when in use.

Does the job

Received on time and pleased with product. I insulated and wrapped pipe and thermostat. So far so good, pipe wrap still operating properly as of this review 3 months now in cold weather. I put off buying one of these for almost 2 years, wish I would have bought one sooner, would have saved me the freezing hose and faucet I dealt with last year.

This works perfectly with my RV fresh water hose since I use my RV in the winter. We’ve had several nights that the temperature was below freezing and my water line hasn’t frozen once!

We have outside shed for our washer, fed via a garden hose. It always froze when it dropped below 30F. Got me some all weather duct tape and a new 15 foot garden hose, and wrapped the heat wire to the hose, (see pic).
Works great, now only the drain hose freezes; guess I’ll do the same with that.

Very flexible to follow contours of water pipe, and used it on water supply output and absolutely no chance of a freeze up with this taped to pipe. Could not find a cold spot anywhere along the length of water supply and the lighted plug-in is a nice plus to know for sure current is being supplied to the heating cable. The built in thermostat is great for shutting off heat to cable when temperature is above 50 degrees. Definitely recommend.

The lead to the actual heat tape a little short, but the tape worked well when installed under pipe insulation. Quick delivery at a good price.

We use it warm the roost in our chicken coop. Not sure if it has an effect on the birds, but we are getting 7 -10 eggs per day through the winter (35deg overnight) from our 14 young hens.
